OUR MISSION AND VALUES
Our Lady of Mt. Vernon Catholic Church existing building was dedicated on September 8, 1968. We are located on the corner of Williams Street and Crawford Lane in the small city of Mt. Vernon Kentucky. Our Lady of Mt. Vernon is the only Catholic Church in the county and is one of the most beautiful Catholic Churches in Eastern Kentucky.
Rev. Ralph Beiting, founder of the Christian Appalachian Project (CAP), which is a well known Christian nondenominational organization in Rockcastle County, brought Catholicism to the area in 1950. Catholic Mass was held in the home and concession store of Mom and Pop (Robert) Reynolds on School Street in Mt. Vernon for several years, until property where the building for Our Lady of Mt. Vernon Catholic Church now sets, was purchased in 1962. Shortly after the purchase of the property, services and religious education classes were held in a concrete building located on the property. Volunteers from all over, here in Kentucky and other states, built the present church entirely from local natural materials.
The church architecture was designed to express openness, welcome, inclusiveness, and to inspire members to go out and spread the Good News of Christ. The stained class windows depict the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, including feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, comforting the sorrowing, and visiting the sick.
The Catholic Community of Our Lady of Mt. Vernon express our Mission as being "Servant Leaders in Rockcastle County." Our Mission statement proclaims, "We are a people who strive to hear the True Shepherd's voice and to follow Him, and to lead others in His ways."
We are committed to working with other Christian Communities in an effort to strengthen the unity of the Body of Christ. We extend the welcome of Christ to all who come to our doors. We honor our Baptismal call to teach and live the Good News by, "reaching in to support, edify and build up the members of this faith community, by reaching out to those who are hurting and in need..."
Our Lady of Mt. Vernon Catholic Church warmly welcomes everyone to pray with us, participate in any of our activities, and help us to serve and build up the Body of Christ in Rockcastle County.
